Why Are Tooth Extractions Sometimes Needed with Braces?

Tooth extractions may be suggested during your orthodontic treatment because it could help you achieve a more functional, stable, and healthy smile. While many people do not want their teeth removed, there are certain circumstances wherein removing one or more teeth could actually help achieve an optimal outcome.

One of the most common reasons why tooth extractions with braces are required is when crowding is present. When there is not enough space in your mouth for all your teeth to align correctly, Dr. Khor may recommend that teeth be extracted to ensure that enough space is available to align your teeth correctly. This is usually performed by your general dentist. Without sufficient space, your teeth may not align correctly or may be unstable after being moved. The teeth will then be able to align correctly within your dental arch.

Another significant reason for this has to do with bite correction. While orthodontic work is often focused on tooth alignment, it’s also focused on how the teeth fit together. In some cases of an overbite or an underbite, teeth may need to be extracted to help correct the bite. This is an important part of dental work, as an uncorrected bite can cause problems.

Extraction may also be used in cases where there are problems such as an open bite, where the upper and lower front teeth don’t meet when the mouth is closed. In such cases, teeth may be extracted in order to allow the front teeth to meet. A proper vertical overlap is important in order to enable proper chewing and talking.

In some cases, the front teeth may also be overly flared, which means they protrude outwards at the wrong angle. By removing the teeth, orthodontists are able to retract the front teeth and align them properly. This not only improves the look of the patient but also improves the stability of the teeth even after the braces are removed.

There are also gum and bone health issues (periodontal concerns). If the supportive structures of the teeth are compromised, then the attempt to align all the teeth without extractions can cause undue stress on the remaining bone and gums. By removing some teeth, the remaining teeth can be seated more solidly in the bone to prevent future problems from occurring.

Ultimately, tooth extractions are not recommended lightly. They are part of a carefully planned treatment strategy designed to achieve optimal results. The goal is always to create a smile that is not only straight, but also functional, stable, and healthy for years to come.

Every patient’s case is unique, and Dr. Khor will evaluate factors like crowding, bite alignment, tooth positioning, and overall oral health before making a recommendation.
